Remembered as the ‘godfather of denim,’ Goldschmied launched brands including Diesel, Agolde and AG during his decades-long career.

Italian designer Adriano Goldschmied died Sunday following a battle with cancer. He was 82.
Widely considered the “godfather of denim,” Goldschmied played a major role in developing the premium denim market, launching brands including Diesel, Gap 1969, Replay, AG and Agolde.
He launched his first label Daily Blue in 1974, which propelled Goldschmied to success. He then leveraged his platform to foster other designers under Genious Group, which supported brands like Diesel and Goldie through infrastructure, production, marketing and sales.
Goldschmied prioritised sustainability through brands like Agolde, which was introduced in 1992 and then AG, launched in 2000. Emphasising environmentally conscious design and construction, Goldschmied adopted water recycling, solar energy and inventive fabrics like Tencel long before they became the norm in the fashion industry.
