DENIM ILLUSION 2: THE ART OF TRANSFORMATION

Tonello pushes the boundaries of denim, transforming refined and technical fabrics into unexpected expressions of its iconic identity. The new collection debuts at Kingpins Amsterdam, October 14–15, 2026.

What happens when a fabric becomes something it was never meant to be?

With Denim Illusion 2, Tonello takes its exploration of material transformation further. While the first chapter demonstrated how the visual identity of denim could be recreated on non-denim fabrics, this new iteration goes one step further, experimenting with materials even more distant from the traditional denim world in terms of properties, texture and applications.

At the heart of this second chapter is lyocell, a refined material appreciated for its soft surface, natural drape and understated elegance, qualities rarely associated with the rough, imperfect character of worn denim.

But the illusion doesn’t stop there.

The collection also explores nylon, blended fabrics and wool, materials with very different identities. From technical and functional fabrics to fibers associated with warmth and sophistication, each is taken outside its familiar territory and given an unexpected denim character.

Behind these transformations lies Tonello’s integrated approach to garment finishing, where dyeing, laser, ozone and washing processes work together to explore new creative possibilities. Rather than simply imitating traditional denim, these processes allow us to rethink what different fabrics can become, expanding their aesthetic potential beyond their original identity.

Denim Illusion 2 is not simply about making everything look like denim. It is about breaking the unwritten rules that define how a material should look, feel and behave.

Because sometimes, the most interesting thing about a material is what it can become.
