Did you know that the global Digital Textile Printing (DTP) market is growing rapidly!! It is growing at a rate of about 20 percent annually and is expected to reach a level of 6213.54 million square meters in 2024, compared to the size of 3580.87 million square meters in 2021. The textile industry has contributed immensely to the digital printing sector. One of the most promising developments in the textile industry is digital textile printing. This has opened the door to numerous possibilities for enhancing and sustaining the growing demand for textile printing.

What is Digital Textile Printing?

Digital textile printing is a process of textile and garment printing using inkjet technology. Digital textile printing is also referred to as direct-to-garment printing because once the design is created, it can be directly printed on the fabric from the computer. This process does not require any screen, and there are no color limitations. It is an ideal technique for 3D design.

How Does the Process Work?

The first task is to create a design according to the buyer’s requirements. The design is created by any graphic design program like Adobe Illustrator or Adobe Photoshop. The design is create into file format, sometimes known as TIFF file. This TIFF format store image without losing any details. Then the image transfer to the pre-treated fabric with the help of inkjet technology and ink cartridges (pigment ink, acid & reactive ink, disperse ink). The first step is to pretreat the fabric with liquid solution so that it accept the dye and better absorb the color. Then it’s fed into the printer, which sprays the dye onto the fabric with tiny droplets as ordered by design and software. The final step is fixing the fabric that ensures the permanency of the design. After ink fixation the fabric is washed and dried properly.

Traditional Printing Vs Digital Printing

Globally there is a growing emphasis on textile sustainability and environmental friendliness hence digital printing technologies are being preferred over traditional printing options. Digital printing enables for more sustainable and cleaner, efficient, profitable production. Conventionally, textile printing and dyeing employ many chemicals and generate large amount of wastewater. On the other hand, DTP process consume less energy and water, produces minimal industrial waste and CO2 emission. That’s why DTP is gaining popularity.

Digital Textile Printing Market Analysis (2017-2024)

Digital textile printing market continous to grow. The global digital textile printing market was 2,029.84 million suare meters in 2017, since then it has been growing. The global DPT market was 2,435 million square meters in 2019, which grew to 2,917.67 million square meters in 2020 and 3,580.87 million square meter in 2021. The DTP current market is expected to grow to 4,314.96 miilion square meters in 2022, 5,177.95 million square meters in 2023 and 6,213.54 miilion square meters in 2024. Digital printing in textiles and apparel to grow by 21.16% annually between 2019-2024. The textile and apparel segment will have a 70% share of the total DTP market of 6,213.54 million square meters in 2024.

Global Digital Textile Printing Market by Ink Type

Based on ink type, the market is segmented into pigment, reactive, sublimation, acid and others. Due to the rising demand for dye-sublimation in customized printing services, the sublimation segment held more than 52% of market share in global market in 2021. Sublimation printing emerged a new type of printing within the digital textile industry.

Global Digital Textile Printing Market by Application

Baed on application the market is segmented into technical textile, household, clothing/garments, soft signage and others.  The clothing/apparels held the higest market share of more than 53% in 2021. It will have 70% share out of total DPT market in 2024. DTP has a wide range of applications in the soft signage industry. It will grow 19.80%  and household will increase at 19.44% in 2024. Other applications was the second largest market in 2021. It will have a market size of 258.76 million square meters in 2024 with annual growth rate of 17.45%.

Digital Textile Printing: Major Growth Destinations

DTP has witnessed significant growth in the recent past and the trend is expected to continue in the future. Europe is the largest regional segment using DTP technology. It share more than 37% in the global market in 2021. Germany and France among the key markets in the European region contributed significantly to the growth. The region was followed by Asia-Pacific with a respective market share of 15.1% in 2021 in terms of volume. China and India are the two major contributors to regional market. China is one of the largest exportes of garments and textiles and hence the demand for textile printers in the country is expanding significantly. Due to growth of textile industry in the regin, countries like Bangladesh, Vietnam, Japan have emerged as center of textile printing. Currently, 60% of digitally printed textiles are produced in Bangladesh, India, Pakistan and Vietnam.

 Digital Textile Printing in Bangladesh

Digital textile printing to bring new area for Bangladesh textile industry. DPT was first patented in 1968 and gained popularity in 1990. In 2015, Beximco group used DTP machine for the first time in Bangladesh. Today’s customers are quite fashionable. So clothing manufacturers are also making clothes keeping fashion in mind. Digital printing is attracted by consumers of all ages. 86% of Bangladesh’s export earnings come from textile and textile products. DTP is doing remarkably well in that regard. Bangladesh has  almost 20-22 factories like Square Group, Liz Group, Padma Group, Mandol Group etc that have digital textile printing machine.

Digital textile printing has opened new doors for textile and clothing designer. There are many opportunities in digital textile printing, and even as new application are opened up by digital technology. There is no doubt that many traditonal textile applications will migrate to digital. The current market exhibits some new innovations in digital textile printing such as continuous inkjet, electrophotography, thermal inkjet etc. Each technology having different and unique charecteristics, benefits and limitations. So, we should work harder with these latest technologies and innovations.
