Recycled and Innovative Denim Exhibition Held at Shanto-Mariam University

At Shanto Mariam University, an exhibition showcasing recycled and new denim garments was held. To visionary artists, there is no such thing as waste — everything in life holds value. Apparel Manufacturing Management and Technology Department innovated high-quality modern clothing from discarded fabric scraps. These uniquely designed denim outfits are not only wearable but also highly refined and profitable.

Speaking at the opening ceremony of the “Zero-Wastage Denim Exhibition”, organized for the first time by the Department of Apparel Manufacturing Management and Technology at Shanto-Mariam University of Creative Technology, the Chairman of the Board of Trustees and eminent artist, Professor Mostafizul Haque, emphasized the significance of this sustainable initiative.

In this unique exhibition, students reused old, discarded denim and industrial fabric waste to create and present environmentally friendly new designs. Held on August 2 at the Creative Art Gallery in the Shanto-Mariam Foundation building in Uttara, the day-long exhibition aimed to spread the concept of sustainable fashion within Bangladesh’s education sector and inspire young people to embrace eco-conscious fashion.

Distinguished guests at the event included denim expert and Ruhrose RBT co-founder Arif Labu, Managing Director of Southan Clothing Tanvir Ahmed, BGMEA-SCICIP Chief Coordinator Munir Chowdhury, and Department Head of AMMT, Farzana Mita. Assistant Professor Rajib Das, course module instructor, played a key role in supervising this practical initiative.

During the second part of the exhibition, in a panel discussion, the guests shared valuable insights and guidance on the future direction of the apparel industry and the role students can play in advancing sustainable denim practices.

The guests highly praised the students’ ability to combine creativity, technical skills, and environmental awareness through this visionary exhibition. They noted that this marks a new chapter in Bangladesh’s apparel education, integrating artistry and innovation.

Course instructor Rajib Das mentioned that students showcased a variety of apparel products based on upcycling both pre- and post-consumer waste through their creative designs. They prioritized sustainable clothing over merely wearable pieces. Items included apparel made from leftover GSM cutter samples, leg panels, shade blankets, rejected garments, and cutting room waste.

Department Head Farzana Mita noted that the students exhibited garments created using various denim wash techniques. This hands-on experience will prepare them to become product developers in the ready-made garment (RMG) industry. She added that such exhibitions and seminars will help students gain practical, job-oriented knowledge and stay ahead in the current job market. The Department of AMMT plans to continue organizing similar events in the future.
