Denim Focus: How do you see the denim washing industry of Bangladesh today?

Kamal Uddin Mia: The transformation of Bangladesh denim washing industry has been incredible. We’ve gone from basic production to offering trend-forward, sustainable denim solutions for nearly every major global brand. Today, Bangladesh is one of the top destinations for high-quality, responsibly washed denim.

This progress didn’t happen overnight – it took years of effort, knowledge exchange, investment, and collaboration. But now, our industry is ready to compete globally, not just in terms of volume but in innovation, sustainability, and fashion-forward thinking.

Denim Focus: What inspired you to pursue a career in denim washing?

Kamal Uddin Mia: Back in 2005, the denim washing industry was underdeveloped and not seen as attractive by many professionals. There were concerns about environmental hazards and a lack of structure. But I saw potential.

Denim washing is a unique blend of art, science, and technology. That fascinated me. Over time, I became passionate about creating new finishes, optimizing processes, and contributing to a growing sector. Today, I feel proud to be part of this journey and to have played a role in building a globally respected industry.

Denim Focus: How do you compare Bangladesh’s washing industry with other competing countries?

Kamal Uddin Mia: Bangladesh has made remarkable progress – especially in the areas of sustainability and compliance. We’re ahead of many in terms of eco-friendly technologies like laser, ozone, nanobubble washing, and low-liquor machines. Competitor countries such as Pakistan, Vietnam, or Turkey are strong, but we’ve built a reputation for being reliable, fast, and now-environmentally responsible.

We also work very closely with global brands like H&M, ZARA, Ralph Lauren, Target USA, and more. These collaborations demand a high standard, and Bangladesh is consistently delivering.

Denim Focus: What are the latest developments at Tarasima Washing Ltd.?

Kamal Uddin Mia: At Tarasima, part of the Bitopi Group, sustainability is at the core of everything we do. We always prioritize fashion with sustainable solutions. Our facility is fully equipped with the latest technology in denim washing, and we are currently expanding our capacity by 40%.

This expansion includes cutting-edge machines like laser, ozone, nanobubble, and low-liquor ratio washing systems, all designed to reduce environmental impact while enhancing our fashion capabilities. Our goal is to be a benchmark in both sustainability and innovation in Bangladesh.

Denim Focus: How do you approach sustainability and what role does R&D play at Tarasima?

Kamal Uddin Mia: We believe R&D is the heart of a successful laundry operation. Our dedicated washing R&D team collaborates closely with local and international fashion designers to align with current trends while focusing on sustainable chemistry and processes.

Every recipe we develop during R&D is tested for environmental impact and then scaled up to production. This ensures we offer not just beautiful products, but also environmentally conscious solutions that resonate with modern consumers and brand expectations.

Denim Focus: What is your outlook for the future of Bangladesh’s denim industry?

Kamal Uddin Mia: The future is very bright. We’ve evolved from producing basic denim to participating in high-fashion, sustainable denim. With 40–42 denim mills in the country today- compared to just 4–5 two decades ago- our growth is undeniable.

Bangladesh now plays a major role in denim fashion innovation and eco-conscious manufacturing. We have strong backward linkages, a highly skilled workforce, and now, state-of-the-art washing and finishing units.

Moreover, global brands see Bangladesh as a partner in sustainable sourcing – not just a low-cost option. This alignment with international expectations puts us in a strong position for long-term growth.

Denim Focus: What advice would you give to newcomers in this industry?

Kamal Uddin Mia: For young professionals, I’d say – don’t look for shortcuts. Focus on gaining real knowledge. Be patient, stay passionate, and continuously update your skills. This industry rewards those who invest time in learning the craft.

Trying to lead without technical understanding or proper training won’t yield results. You need to understand the science, the process, and the art behind denim washing if you want to truly excel and contribute meaningfully to our industry.

During our visit to Tarasima Washing Ltd., the Denim Focus team was impressed by the advanced infrastructure and the clean, safe, and well-organized working environment. The company’s strong focus on sustainability was evident through its water recycling systems, eco-friendly chemical storage, and use of digital laser machines. Mr. Kamal Uddin Mia’s vision of combining fashion, functionality, and sustainability showcases a forward-thinking approach that sets an example for the industry. With such leadership and innovation, Bangladesh’s denim sector is on track to become not only a major manufacturing hub but also a global leader in sustainable fashion technology.
